California Eviction Moratorium: Now What?

What Changed?

According to the California Courts website, “As of October 1, 2021, a tenant may be evicted for any legal reason, including failure to pay rent.” Previously, the law had been amended in light of the unique circumstances for people during COVID-19.

What’s Next?

From October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, landlords who wish to evict their tenants for not being able to pay rent must apply for rental assistance. This applies only to rent that was due from March 1, 2020 to March 31, 2022, and only if the tenants moved in before October 1, 2021.
